The next Monsterverse movie, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, hits theaters in 2024, continuing the story established from 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. Leading up to their epic team-up, Legendary Comics announced a prequel comic to the new movie, Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted, being funded via Kickstarter. For some lucky fans with the cash to spend, this is their chance to get up close and personal with the famous monsters.

Two books have been announced in the Kickstarter – Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted and Monsterverse Declassified. With 13 more days to go as of writing, the campaign has already reached its funding goal, and anyone who just wants to read the graphic novels can get access for $15.

But the $1,500 tier offers fans the chance to have their appearance show up in the books, including a one-of-a-kind giclee print of the page where they appear.

Godzilla x Kong: The Hunted has the behemoths pair up to take down a Skull Island hunter going after seriously big game in the Hollow Earth. The book is set to release in March 2024, a month before The New Empire releases in theaters, so fans can make sure they’re caught up on the full story. The graphic novel is written by Brian Buccellato (Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong), with art by Dario Fomisani (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Drew Johnson (Godzilla: Aftershock), and Zid (Kingdom Kong).

Monsterverse Declassified is the first-ever anthology series to take place in the official Monsterverse. The book is still in development, but will have origin stories of fan-favorite Titans like Doug, Behemoth, and Tiamat, plus another that’s yet to be revealed. Bernie Hayes, portrayed by prolific actor Brian Tyree Henry in the films, takes readers through the annals of Monarch histories and secrets to discover the truths behind Legendary’s most famous monsters. It releases after The New Empire, as Declassified is still being worked on. Monsterverse Declassified has a much larger creative team, being an anthology collection, so far featuring writers David M. Booher, Umar Ditta, Rosie Knight, and Dan Park; and artists Francesco Biagini, David Ferracci, Oliver Ono, Marco Roblin, and Drew Zucker.

Both books are only available in hardcover format through the Kickstarter, and certain pledge levels include a deluxe, “Monarch eyes only” slipcase for the comics. Other rewards for the campaign include pearlescent prints from The New Empire film, enamel pins of the Titans in Declassified, one-of-a-kind commissioned monster art from artist Drew Johnson, patches, stickers, and more. The most impressive reward, however, is the chance for fans to appear in the books themselves. There are five rewards for backers to appear in The Hunted, and four available to appear in Monsterverse Declassified, each $1,500.

As of this writing, the five for The Hunted have been claimed, but two are still available for Declassified. Appearing in an official comic for a favorite franchise like the Monsterverse is a huge get for anyone lucky enough to snag one of these limited rewards. Godzilla and Kong have fought fearsome figures all over Earth and beyond, and that’s only going to continue in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, but for Kickstarter backers, the hardest Monsterverse hit of all may be to their own bank accounts.
